I joined Devon Rape Crisis and Sexual Abuse Services as a volunteer over seven years ago because I wanted to make a full commitment to the issues that I feel deeply about and where I felt I could really make a difference.
My new role as Volunteer Coordinator has given me an opportunity to support our amazing bunch of women volunteers who keep our anonymous Helpline and Email service going. They support the people who contact us with empathy and care, helping them to express their feelings and explore options in a supportive and non-judgemental way. They ensure that our service users know that they are not alone, we are there for them, and to help them find a way forward and cope.
I learned such a lot as a volunteer, both about the issues of sexual violence and about myself - what I am capable of and about the power of working together. Now I am learning new skills and enjoying new opportunities to work alongside both volunteers and staff who provide our confidential and professional support services.
