RAPE AND SEXUAL ASSAULT IN THE UK

• 22% of women experience sexual assault as an adult

• 5% of women experience rape

• 21% of girls experience some form of sexual abuse

• Most adult perpetrators of sexual violence are male and most adult victims are female

• 40% of adults who are raped tell no one about it

• Only 11% of Rapes are reported

• Only 6% of rapes and sexual assaults result in a conviction in court

• 31% of children who are abused reach adulthood without telling anyone

• Around 40% of rapes involve alcohol

• Only 8% of rapes are perpetrated by strangers

• 65% of callers to rape crisis centres are survivors of childhood sexual abuse

• Only 3% of rapes and sexual assaults are ‘false allegations’
